Foreigner Friendly Hospitals in South Korea: Our Personal Experience
When it comes to seeking medical care in a foreign country, it can be a daunting task to find a hospital that caters to your needs as a foreigner. As residents of South Korea, we've had the opportunity to visit various hospitals in the country and would like to share our personal experience with finding foreigner-friendly healthcare facilities.
The Landscape of Hospitals in Korea
In South Korea, the hospital landscape offers a wide range of options, from small clinics run by a few medical practitioners to large tertiary hospitals affiliated with medical schools. The smaller clinics, often located near subway stations, serve as primary or secondary hospitals where patients can see a doctor without a referral. These clinics are usually run by specialists in specific fields.
On the other hand, tertiary hospitals, such as Seoul National University Hospital, Korea University Hospital, Kyunghee University Hospital, and general hospitals like Samsung Medical Center, require a referral letter from a primary or secondary hospital to seek treatment. These tertiary hospitals are known for their advanced medical facilities and specialized departments.
Our Recommendation: Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital in Seoul
Based on our yearly visits, including the most recent one in March 2024, Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital in Seoul comes highly recommended. It is a well-established hospital with multiple branches across the country, providing a range of specialized medical services, including departments for cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, and more. The hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology and facilities, ensuring that patients receive the best possible care.
One of the main reasons for this recommendation is the increasing number of foreigners observed during our visits. The hospital caters to a diverse range of ethnicities, with foreign patients seen throughout the waiting areas and examination rooms including the ultrasound room. The hospital seems to understand the unique challenges faced by foreign patients and strives to create a comfortable and welcoming environment. The staff is trained to be culturally sensitive and respectful, ensuring that foreign patients feel at ease during their visit.
Moreover, over the past decade, we have noticed that the hospital utilizes English more extensively than other establishments, making their charts and systems appear more professional, organized, and experienced. Additionally, the hospital's location in Hannamdong, close to Itaewon where many foreigners reside, may contribute to this diversity. Being surrounded by other foreign patients can create a more comfortable environment.
The convenience of shuttle buses running from Hannam Subway Station and Hanggangjin Subway Station further adds to the hospital's appeal. For more information, you can visit their official website at https://www.schmc.ac.kr/seoul/index.do.

The center provides assistance with appointment scheduling, medical interpretation, and even airport pick-up services.
General hospitals like Samsung Medical Center, located in the heart of Seoul, also provide excellent care to foreign patients. The hospital has a dedicated International Clinic that offers a range of services, including medical interpretation, assistance with insurance claims, and support for medical tourism.
